So good! Went on the 6:45am 2hour tour yesterday and other than it being very hot towards the end because it’s the wet season, it was perfect. So full of wildlife and knowledge! Within the first 15 mins we had been up close with a massive salt water croc and some rare birds. The kids loved it! ( 6 and 8 years old )
Really enjoyed our 4:30pm sunset. Cruise during Kakadu bird week. Our guide, Greg ‘Gecko’ was ‘exceedingly’ (often used phase of his) knowledgeable about the area, habitat, animals and history. Made the journey interesting for us all with a few corny jokes thrown in too. Highlight was seeing a croc devour a barramundi on the bank of the river.
From our boat, we were taken right up to where crocodiles sunbaked and a multitude of birds congregated. We were privileged to see a pair of Jabirus/Black-necked Storks, along with Great and Minor Egrets, cormorants, ducks galore, herons, and many more that I can't name. The fields of white and blue water lilies were magnificent. The guide explained the Indigenous use for several plants along the way. Of course, there were many crocofiles of all sizes. Wild brumbies, water buffalo and a boar were pointed out to us. Make sure you take binoculars and have a camera with a telephoto lense if you are into serious picture taking. This trip is a must do if in the Kakadu area.
Firstly I have to thank the staff for re booking us when I got the dates wrong and missed our dawn cruise and without any costs involved. Thankyou so much.Up the crack of dawn and bused out to the river and loaded onto the 5 boats going out.Take mozie spray as they are out in force this time in the morning.Good boats and knowledgable staff. We saw lots of crocs, abundant bird life, wild brumbies, water buffalo and everything you expected to see.Really interesting and a true feel of what you expect in kakadu. We were even treated to a bonus free breakfast after the cruise.Buffet style
From the moment we started on this tour we knew it was going to be a good day. Our guide was witty and professional with an excellent presentation to begin with. We saw an abundance of wildlife including wild brumby, buffalo, heaps of crocs, fish, birds and so much more. It was fabulous and loved cruising down the billabong! Saw a croc catch a fish and snap went the jaws - this was natural and-not forced feeding. So so good.
While we stayed at Cooinda, we took advantage of going on a Yellow Water cruise. I had had friends who had recently done a cruise, and they were very impressed. We took the 9.00 am cruise which included being bused both ways. Our guide, a young woman in her first year with the company, was excellent. She was very knowledgeable about the flora and fauna and obviously loved the environment in which she worked. She made the two hour cruise an absolute pleasure. We saw so many bird varieties, many were specific to the area and many I had never seen previously. She gave everyone plenty of time to take photos and to ask questions before moving on to another animal or plant. Her knowledge of the tree varieties , the water Lilly varieties , the weeds - both good and bad, and grasses and the palms was first rate. She told us lots of amusing anecdotes regarding some specific crocodiles, and the behaviour patterns of the crocodiles in both the wet and the dry seasons. I can not recommend this tour highly enough. It is an absolute must for anyone wanting to gain some insight in to how Kakadu’s wetlands function.
