About Yackandandah Gorge

Just a short two kilometre walk from the town centre is the historic Yackandandah Gorge. Construction of the gorge began in 1859 to act as a trail race to sluice gravel and sand from up stream. The cutting through the granite was constructed by hand using pick and shovel. During the 1880s it was deepened and lengthened using dynamite. The walk to the gorge takes you beside the creek weaving in and out of the woodlands before arriving at the open area at the gorge. The walk is an easy level suitable for those with an average fitness level, not suitable for wheel chairs. For those not wishing to take the full trail, there is a short walk from the Bells Flat Road car park.
